SIGN LANGUAGE WORKSHOP OPENS DOOR TO DEAF CULTURE
Helping deaf students feel welcome at Botho University (BU) can be a challenge when most faculty and staff don't know sign language. This is why the Office of Staff and Student Outreach (OSSO) at BU held a Sign Language workshop for academic and non-academic staff. The workshop was organised to sensitize staff on the area of special needs targeting those with hearing impairments. The Sign Language workshop was the first of its kind where staff was able to engage in basic signs and learnt how to interact with a deaf person. The workshop facilitator, Ms Catherine Shashane, director of Sign Language Skill Development Centre, advisor and mentor of both hearing and deaf, is a well known Botswana Television (BTV) sign language interpreter. Facilitator Mr Goatlhokwa Seloma, a self-employed director, who is also deaf, shared the basic ways of communicating with deaf people and ensured that workshop participants practiced these ways.
